OFELIA ESPARZA: A RETROSPECTIVE

Widely recognized as one of California’s most revered folk artists with a cultural impact spanning more than seven decades, Esparza helped bring the cherished traditions of Mexican altar-making and Día de los Muertos into the American mainstream, beginning in the 1970s, through her work with community arts center Self Help Graphics & Art in Boyle Heights.

Form and Function in the Ancient Americas highlights the wide range of cultures represented in our Ancient American collection. Cultures from the Nayarit-Jalisco-Colima region of West Mexico (2000 – 1000 BCE) to the Chimú of Peru (900-1500 CE) are featured.

We are pleased to announce the Open Call for the return of "New Voices," the East Los Angeles College (ELAC) student art exhibition. Applications are available now through Friday, February 27, 2026 at 4:00 PM PST.
"New Voices: The 2026 ELAC Juried Student Art Exhibition" is open to all students who have been enrolled, successfully completed, and produced artwork in an arts class at East Los Angeles College in Spring 2025 through Fall 2025 semester, including Summer 2025 and Winter 2026 intersessions.
The exhibition will feature a range of ceramics, photography, painting, drawing, digital illustration, and mixed media works produced exclusively by ELAC students. Artworks will be reviewed and selected by curator, educator, and writer Jheanelle Brown (@jheaneeeeeelle).

As part of “Act On It! Artists, Community, and the Brockman Gallery in Los Angeles,” join us on Thursday, November 13 at 6:00 PM for “Erasure: Black Arts LA.”
Participate in a hands-on poetry activity facilitated by poet and artist Rebecca Gonzales.
Plus: Acclaimed cultural critic and writer Ernest Hardy presents a multimedia lecture investigating the many dimensions of Black erasure (collective, historical, structural, and cultural) through an incisive mix of film clips, literature, music, and social media. Rooted in the legacy of the Black Arts West movement and drawing from Hardy’s collaborative archival project “The Black Book,” the presentation will trace cultural erasure and resilience, while proposing pathways toward reimagined futures.
